Understanding duty hours
This is where most monthly arrangements go wrong. "Full day" does not mean the driver is available for whatever you need whenever you need it. It means a defined window - typically 9 AM to 8 PM - inside which he drives.
Agree these five things in writing before day one:
- Start and end time. Not "morning to evening". An actual clock time.
- Weekly off. Which day, and whether it is fixed or rotating.
- Overtime rate. Standard is Rs 80-150 per hour beyond duty hours.

- Notice period. Two weeks either side is normal and fair.
The single biggest source of disputes: undefined overtime. If your driver regularly stays till 10 PM on a duty ending at 8 PM and nobody has agreed a rate, resentment builds silently for months and then the person quits without notice. Fix the number on day one.
What is not included
Budget for these separately - they are on you, not the driver:
- Fuel for the vehicle.
- Tolls and parking during duty.
- Meal allowance - roughly Rs 100-150 per day, or provide lunch.
- Festival bonus - one month's salary around Diwali is the norm in NCR. Skipping it is noticed.
- Uniform, if you want one.
Monthly versus booking daily
The break-even is simpler than people assume. A full-day monthly driver at Rs 22,000 works out to roughly Rs 850 per working day. Booking a full day on demand costs Rs 1,200-1,800.
Monthly wins if you need a driver more than about 15 days a month, want the same person to know your routine and your family, or need school runs at fixed times.
Daily wins if you drive yourself most days and only want cover for evenings and weekends, travel frequently so the car sits idle, or simply do not want the responsibility of an employee.
Verification is not optional
A person with your car keys and your house address every day needs to be properly checked. Non-negotiable:
- Aadhaar and driving licence, both verified against the original.
- Police verification for the address he actually lives at.
- At least two previous-employer references you personally call.
- A photograph of the licence stored somewhere you can retrieve it.

Handling leave
Your driver will take leave. Village visits during harvest, family weddings, and illness are all normal and all inevitable. The question is what you do those weeks.
Sort this out at the start rather than during the emergency. Either agree that he arranges a known replacement, or keep an on-demand booking option as your fallback so a fortnight in the village is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.
